El desarrollo exponencial en múltiples áreas de la ciencia, desde la genética, pasando por la biología, la química, etc., y terminando con la inteligencia artificial ha creado un nuevo campo en el área de la salud: la medicina de precisión, con la promesa de individualizar el diagnóstico y tratamiento óptimos para cada paciente. Aunque sus avances han sido más notables en el área de la oncología, con resultados impensables hace unos pocos años, el turno le está llegando a la neumología. En este artículo presentamos un resumen sobre al estado de la ciencia en lo que respecta a la medicina de precisión aplicada a la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica, con énfasis en las distinciones entre pacientes con el mismo diagnóstico clínico, pero con profundas diferencias en su biología a nivel molecular.

Although its advances have been more notable in the field of oncology, with results unthinkable a few years ago, it is now Pulmonology’s turn”. In this article, we present a summary of the state of the science regarding precision medicine applied to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, with emphasis on the distinction between patients with the same clinical diagnosis, but with profound differences at the biomolecular level.
